NWP Job Losses Impact Local Work

As I made my way around Capitol Hill yesterday, visiting with Senators and Representatives from Missouri and Kansas, asking them to be champions for the National Writing Project, I knew that I was fighting for jobs – not just for my own, but for the 60% of NWP staff who found out last week that they were laid off. These lost jobs were not tangential to the work that I do as a site director at the Greater Kansas City Writing Project – the loss of NWP staff members is a loss that will impact every one of the more than 200 sites across the country.

The National Writing Project is commited to improve the reading, writing, and thinking of our nation’s students. Congress must restore federal funding to the NWP so that we can continue to successfully impact student learning, pre-school through college.
